Mines and Quarries Electrical Protection
Also Known As: AS HB 119:2019
A standard called SA/SNZ HB 119:2019 offers recommendations for the creation and use of electrical protection for the electrical power supply systems in mines and quarries. It is relevant to all varieties of mines and quarries that fall under each state's or territory's mining regulators' purview. This comprises extractive quarries, gem mines, open-cut coal mines, underground coal mines, underground metalliferous mines, processing plants (metals and coal), and mineral and gas exploration sites.
All AC power supply voltages, from low voltage to high voltage, are covered by the standard. However, it excludes UPSs, inverters, and DC power solutions. Future iterations of the standard might include these uses, it is mentioned. The scope of the standard covers both the standalone generating facilities for the mine installations and the mains supply from electrical distribution utilities.
The standard discusses overvoltage protection approaches and devices while concentrating primarily on anomalies and failures that cause fault currents. By identifying potential electrical risks and prescribing suitable safety precautions, it seeks to ensure the safe and reliable functioning of electrical systems in mines and quarries.
