The test procedure for figuring out the gross calorific value of coal and coke is ASTM D5865/D5865M-19. In order to calculate the overall calorific content of the coal or coke for payment purposes, for example, the gross calorific value is a crucial metric. By calculating the calorific value vs. sulfur content, it can also be used to determine whether the coal complies with legal standards for industrial fuels.
The gross calorific value can also be used to assess how well beneficiation operations, which are employed to raise coal quality, are working. Coal may also need to be categorized using Classification D388.
Either an isoperibol or an adiabatic combustion calorimeter can be used to conduct the test. These calorimeters offer a way to gauge the heat produced during burning, enabling the calculation of the coal or coke sample's gross calorific value.
