Standard EN SampleNatural Stone Test Methods: Determination of Frost Resistance
Also Known As:
The European Standard BS EN 12371:2010 describes a procedure for evaluating the frost resistance of natural stones. Two tests are included in the standard: Test A, a technological test that is shorter and is designed to determine how freeze/thaw cycles affect the performance characteristics of the stones, and Test B, an identification test.
Additionally, the standard notes that certain marble types may experience changes in their physical characteristics as a result of the test circumstances rather than freeze-thaw cycles. In such circumstances, further tests mandated by BS EN 14066 ought to be carried out.
The standard gives comprehensive details on the scope, normative references, principles, symbols, apparatus, and specimen preparation. It covers a number of topics, including sample size, specimen size, core temperature monitoring, specimen drying, immersion, apparent volume determination, cycle count, and test protocol.
In addition, BS EN 12371:2010 provides instructions on how to arrange the test specimens in the freezing tank, describe freezing and thawing cycles, take control measurements to gauge freeze/thaw resistance, express results, and specify the format of the test report. The bibliography includes a list of pertinent publications, and the annex offers instructive test cycles.
