A method for determining the low-temperature reduction-disintegration index and level of metallization of iron ores is described in ISO 11257:2022. This is accomplished by replicating the circumstances present during processes involving shaft direct-reduction. 

The standard focuses on determining how much metallization and size deterioration there is in iron ores. In order to assess the calibre and acceptability of iron ores for use as feedstocks in shaft direct-reduction processes, it gives a relative metric for these properties.

The standard covers many types of iron ore materials often used in direct-reduction processes and is applicable to both lump ores and hot-bonded pellets.
