The ISO 1953:2015 standard specifies reference techniques for measuring the size of hard coal using the screening process. The standard uses test sieves with aperture diameters ranging from 125 mm to 45 mm and includes both wet and dry sifting techniques. The standard's Annex A also provides instructions on the sampling procedure.

It is significant to highlight that coke and other produced fuels are not covered by this guideline, which only applies to hard coal. The procedures outlined in ISO 1953:2015 will only be able to estimate the proportion of oversize particles in pulverized coal that has been finely crushed and primarily passes through the lowest test sieve aperture.
